Thornton, Colorado, December 2021 — A Child’s Song (ACS) is pleased to announce that we have received a $10,000 grant from Take  Note Colorado for a brand-new program offered at Crossroads Community Center in Northglenn. The program, which will begin in January 2022, provides culturally-appropriate movement and music classes for children ages 3 to 6, and group guitar and keyboard lessons for older youth once a week, with programming continuing throughout the year,  including during the Summer and school vacations. To learn more or register, please contact A Child’s Song via e-mail at  [email protected] or via phone at (303) 460-7408.

This program, referred to as the Northglenn Alliance, grew out of conversations with community members who were frustrated with a lack of educational enrichment programs for their children in their own neighborhood, specifically musical programming. They were looking for programs for their children that could be offered at the same time parents participated in ELL classes, removing the barrier of childcare. This program is a community collaboration between ACS,  Mercy Music, and Crossroads Church.

ACS has been providing musical programming to over 125 youth at five Shiloh House locations. Shiloh is a local nonprofit that provides foster care, therapy, and educational services for at-risk youth throughout  Colorado. Thornton, Colorado, July 2021 — A Child’s Song (ACS) is pleased to announce a recent generous grant from Take Note Colorado for the expansion of an innovative music program serving foster youth. The program was initially piloted at Shiloh House, a local nonprofit that provides foster care, therapy, and educational services for at-risk youth. ACS plans to expand the program to serve additional foster care locations in the near future.

Shiloh House connected with ACS because they wanted to bring the hope and joy of music to the foster youth in their care—especially during the chaos and uncertainty brought on by COVID-19. The two nonprofits chose the World Drumming Program as a starting point because of drumming’s accessibility and cultural importance. The curriculum focuses on drumming, singing, and movement in the style of the music of West Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean—and everyone from the youth involved to Shiloh instructors and staff has been mesmerized by the program.

Mary Beth Hietapelto, Shiloh’s Independent Living Coach, explained, “ACS instructors have created a drum circle that is also a safe space. Clients come to the group escalated and in negative headspaces, but in just a few minutes their energy is uplifted. Please expand this program to other locations! Foster kids need this!”

“Shiloh House and ACS remain determined to create an accessible, compelling program that engages foster youth on day one and keeps their interest throughout the year,” explained Sandy Taylor, ACS’s Executive Director. “Take Note’s funding has allowed us to create a program that is authentically changing the spirit and connectedness of youth in these foster care locations.”

Thornton, Colorado, May 2021 – Thanks to Colorado Creative Industries’ generous grant funding, A Child’s Song (ACS) has provided music and movement classes and music-based therapy to approximately 220 youth with learning differences, developmental disabilities, and social-emotional challenges during 2020! Some classes were held in local K-8 schools, while others met in the nonprofit’s Thornton studio, or were conducted virtually. Beginning in 2020, ACS partnered with Shiloh House, a local nonprofit that provides foster care, therapy, and educational services for displaced youth. Shiloh connected with ACS because they wanted to bring the hope and joy of music to the foster youth in their care—especially during the chaos and uncertainty brought on by COVID-19.

The two nonprofits chose the World Music Drumming Program as a starting point because of drumming’s accessibility and cultural importance. The curriculum focuses on drumming, singing, and movement in the style of the music of West Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean—and everyone from the youth involved to Shiloh instructors and staff have been mesmerized by the program.

Mary Beth Hietapelto, Shiloh’s Independent Living Coach, shares, “ACS instructors create a drum circle that is also a safe space. Clients have come to the group escalated and in negative head spaces, but in just a few minutes their energy is uplifted. Please expand this program to our other locations! Our kids need this!”

Prior to the implementation of Shiloh’s World Drumming Program, there were few music education or music therapy programs for youth in out-of-home placement or foster care in Adams County. Foster youth in other parts of the country, however, were thriving in music programs for years. Shiloh House and ACS remain determined to create an accessible, compelling program that engages foster youth on day one and keeps their interest throughout the year. World Drumming has done just that and is authentically changing the spirit and connectedness of youth in these foster care locations.

The Shiloh World Drumming Program plans for further expansion in 2021. Thank you, Colorado Creative Industries, for bringing the hope and joy of music into the lives of Colorado’s youth
