A Taste of Theatre Camp Brings Thumbelina to Life with Lively Adaptation

Our ‘A Taste of Theatre’ June summer camp went off without a hitch. Educator, Cassie Draper, created a whimsical and entertaining adaptation of Thumbelina and the cast and crew brought it to life in a delightful and lively performance!

Students ages 6+ worked hard all week discovering the basics of theatre, learning lines, and songs, digging into their characters, and mastering their roles. By the end of the week, they had learned:

  • Acting Fun: How to step into multiple fictional characters using their voices, expressions, and movements.
  • Moving and Grooving: How to use their body effectively on stage, practicing open stage positioning of their body, and learning how to follow directions on where to stand and move.
  • Voice Power: Through confidence-building exercises, they practiced how they can sing and speak strongly and clearly, so everyone can hear them when they perform on stage.
Making It Up: How to make up stories and scenes on the spot, using their imaginations and working together with their friends.
  • Theater Words: New words that actors and actresses use, like the names for different parts of the stage, types of performances, and cool theater styles and terms.
  • Making the Magic: The behind-the-scenes secrets of the stage like creating sets, using lights and sounds, and designing awesome costumes.
  • Getting Ready to Shine: How to prepare for performances, how to memorize lines, and work together as a team to create amazing shows.
  • Wow the Crowd: How to engage and excite the audience when they perform. They discovered the magic of connecting with the people watching them and making them feel part of the show.

At the end of camp, participants put on a wonderful show for friends and family showcasing all of the things they learned throughout the week. It was a joyous evening of theatre followed by a delightful cast party where students and audience members mingled and enjoyed a treat.

I enjoyed theatre camp a lot. We laughed so much and didn't realize we were learning! It was fun to play the Thumbelina characters.

A round of applause for our brave participants!
